DIHLABENG CAREER JAMBOREE
On the 5th of March 2016 scores of learners from all of the five town constituting the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, descended to the new hall in Bohlokong, to take part in the Career Jamboree. The hugely successful event was organised by the Office of Council Whip, Cllr Lindiwe Makhalema. The venue of the event was filled to capacity by learners from grades 10 to 12.
The main purpose of the event was to expose learners to different career options and to motivate them to aim high and also remain focused on their studies. One of the main speakers, Mr Selby Mofokeng, Director: Career Guidance at the Free State Department of Education encouraged the learners achieve high level passes in all subjects as it would make it easy for them to get admission into universities. He also advised learners not to only focus on the most popular fields of study, but to rather focus on those that are regarded as scarce skills. He shared with the learners an initiative by his Office called Learner Focus Week. This initiative involves taking learners on field trips to various institutions of higher learning, companies and organisations to give learner first-hand experience about possible career paths.
Another keynote speaker, Mr Keabetswe “Kaybee” Mofokeng, a clinical psychologist and career counsellor, motivated the learners. His emphasis was on principles that help an individual to achieve personal goals. According to him the most important issues are: sacrifice, discipline, commitment and patience.
The Minister of Mineral Resources Mr Mosebenzi Joseph Zwane, graced the event with his presence. In his address, he encouraged the learners to consider careers in Mining. He emphasised the importance of choosing pure Maths as a subject in order to follow these career paths.
DJs Twasa and Selibi Molefe from Lesedi FM entertained and motivated the crowed. Local artist Janisim also entertained the learners with his poetic and musical renditions, he even gave away free copies of his CDs to the leaners.
